A Short Survey of Classic Scottish Writing (2001)
Published as number 7 in the newly created series Canongate Pocket Classics. Originally the volume was only available as part of a box set including the first six classics (set price £12.99). This box set consisted of works by Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott, James Hogg, Robert Louis Stevenson, Muriel Spark and James Kelman. The book is almost an appendix to The Book of Prefaces, giving the reader a historical trip through Scotland's rich literary past and concentrating upon the links between politics and social conditions and the literary works produced. He stops before having to deal with his own era, for fear of accusations of writing about his friends and favourites.

Alasdair Gray's books are sometimes difficult to get hold of. Where they are available, I have included links below to the amazon sites in the UK and the USA. Where a record is on their database, they will usually include links to used-book sellers who can offer the title, even if it is not available direct from amazon themselves.

Not on Amazon USA. Try the UK Site, Bookfinder (see links page) or Morag McAlpine.

Alternatively, you can try emailing Morag McAlpine, who can send you a list of available titles. She usually has a variety of out-of-print books, often signed, and also a selection of prints of Gray's artwork, also signed.
